In the past decade or so, I have heard very little opposition to Muslim extremism from normal Muslims themselves. It seems that if Muslims were to publicly oppose the actions of Muslim extremists that a lot of good could come out of it. Who knows … maybe 1 of 2 al-Qaeda recruits would reject the offer.
What would happen if a terrorist group proclaimed that they were acting on behalf of Jesus or Buddha? Surely Christians would declare, “O hell no you’re not doing this on behalf of Jesus, so you just shut your blaspheming mouth you damned terrorist,” but without the curse words.
I think that terrorism prevention would be best accomplished by public opposition to terrorism by Muslims themselves.

Your question is based upon the supposition that Muslims don’t fundamentally agree with the extremists. We have no proof of that at all. Indeed, we have reams of evidence to contrary.
It truly seems that Muslims only disagree with the terrorists on matters of the efficacy of their actions, not on their goals are basis for their actions.
Good point.
There is plenty of opposition from muslim groups, to muslim extremism. There are websites, there are campaigns. It just so happens that they don’t attract media attention.
