America has many socialist programs already in place. Take, for example, public education: If public education is not a socialist program, then what is it?
Socialism, like communism, is dangerous when implemented maliciously. And the same can be said about capitalism.

During the 2008 Presidential campaign many anti-Obama people decried that Obama was ‘going to turn this country socialist’.
That is a scary thought for many people because they equate socialism with our enemies of the cold war. Indeed, I am sure that for the rest of my life I will oppose anything that has the word ‘taliban’ associated with it.

NO! Public education is not a socialist program. It is not paid for by the government. It is paid for from taxes levied on the people. We the citizens pay for public education. Before public education, children were forced to work in the northern sweatshops for sixteen hours each day…starting at age five. The labor movement against the rich and powerful corporate tycoons resulted in, after many deaths, fair wages and more humane treatment of workers. It also resulted in a law requiring children to go to school rather than be subjected to forced labor. Only good has come from public education.

I agree, only good has come from public education …
But when you say, “It is paid for from taxes levied on the people,” you have effectively said, “it is socialist.” Governments that pay for programs get the money to do so from “taxes levied on the people.”
